Traditionally the Stewart family have been sheep farmers, although small amounts of butter was made and sold locally after settlement in Hiwinui.

In 1994 a small part of the farm was diversified into dairy cows, supplying milk to what was at that time, Tui Milk Products. Since then, due to the economics and the upturn of dairying in New Zealand the dairy farm has increased in size.

To simplify management, Stewart Dairylands was formed within the Stewart Group. Stewart Dairylands is set to milk 500 cows twice daily and supply around two million litres of milk this year to Fonterra Co-operative Group.
