100% CLEAN GREEN NEW ZEALAND
Winners of the PGG Wrightson Land and Life Award at the 2009 Horizons Region Ballance Farm Environment Awards.
This award recognises a farming enterprise that demonstrates co-operation and sustainability in New Zealand agriculture.
Agriculture and environmentalism must co-exist together in harmony.
Being in the New Zealand agribusiness it is our responsibility to not only supply protein to a rapidly growing world population, but also to produce foreign exchange for our country.
We also have the responsibility in our life time to be our stewards of the land while maintaining it in its most productive form.
Live as if you are going to die tomorrow
Farm as if you are going to live forever.
In the late 1980s the Stewart family began landscape planting projects under the guidance of the late Alan Stewart. An ambitious 100 year project was embarked on and designed to work in harmony with nature and plan ecosystems that would provide sustainable land use.
This sustainable land use project saw the beginning of the planned strategic planting of nutrient interceptor beds made up of native trees and flaxes that are simply planted in run off collection areas where unwanted nutrients are converted by plants to create clear clean waterways.
The global phenomenon of consumerism and the drive to lift agricultrual production since the 1960s has proved to be financially and environmentally unsustainable.
There is no doubt that past man made developments and practices have impacted on the world's environment, water quality and wildlife are under severe threat and it is our generation's responsibility to take apporpriate action.
